Blue and white Lantau family home lets the living be easy
With its dazzling colour scheme and rustic vibe, this bright and breezy Lantau family home is a breath of fresh air, writes Viv Jones.
From the outside, Jo and Willy Lorenz’s village house in Lantau is unassuming and unremarkable. The 2,100-sq-ft, threestorey building looks much like its island neighbours – until you pass through the bold blue front door. Then the true nature of the house reveals itself as a breath of Australian fresh air in steamy Hong Kong.
It was a concrete shell,” says Jo, who was eight months pregnant with her second son when they moved in after a three-month renovation. The couple picked up the restoration work where the previous owners had left off and set about turning three separate 700-square-foot apartments into a cohesive home.
Sitting room Jo Lorenz designed a faux chimney breast to disguise ugly pipework. The Ektorp twoseater sofa and chaise longue (HK$6,290 for both), and plant stands (HK$299 each), were from Ikea. The coffee table was a gift. The vintage barn pendant lamp (HK$390) came from sofasale.com.hk and the Spode Italian dairy jug was a gift.

British sofas share a complex history, alongside the elite, the privileged and aristocrats. History reveals that the Leather Chesterfield Sofas and the fabric Camberley sofas have been commonly used in the confines of old institutions, government buildings and luxurious homes for generations.
英國沙發歷史久遠，很多傢具均以高品質、優雅為名。以Camberley sofas 為例。是很多皇室及政府官邸曾使用的高級傢具。
A room, in the 1900’s, would not be complete, unless the master owns a British hand-crafted sofa. Gentlemen, wearing hats and bowlers, seek momentary refuge in their respective morning rooms, laying their backs onto these comfortable Chesterfields. On the other hand, women, donning their formal dresses, are all glammed up, busying themselves with a cup of tea and biscuits, while enjoying their time in these fabric Camberleys. Comfort, sophistication and style define a British Class Sofa, and both the Chesterfield and Camberley sofas represent it all.
在19世紀，主人房是不能沒有高素質的手工製沙發。紳士淑女們，穿戴得體，對服裝一絲不苟，對室內傢具的要求更是層次甚高，由此看出Chesterfield 和Camberley 沙發的素質非凡。
The Barcelona Chair needs little in the way of introduction. One of the most iconic and celebrated designs of the 20th century, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Chair appears to us now “as if it has existed forever.
It was originally designed for the German Pavilion, that country's entry for the International Exposition of 1929, which was hosted by Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It was first used in Villa Tugendhat, a World Heritage Site designed by Mies van der Rohe in the city of Brno.
The frame was initially designed to be bolted together, but was redesigned in 1950 using stainless steel, which allowed the frame to be formed by a seamless piece of metal, giving it a smoother appearance. Bovine leather replaced the ivory-colored pigskin which was used for the original pieces.
The functional design and elements of it that were patented by Mies in Germany, Spain and the United States in the 1930s have since expired. The Barcelona chair was manufactured in the US and Europe in limited production from the 1930s to the 1950s. In 1953 Mies ceded his rights and his name on the design to Knoll. knowing that his design patents were expired. This collaboration then renewed popularity in the design.
In his 1981 book about modern architecture, From Bauhaus to Our House, Tom Wolfe mocked the Barcelona chair as "the Platonic ideal of chair", and wrote that, despite its high price, owning one had become a necessity for young architects: "When you saw the holy object on the sisal rug, you knew you were in a household where a fledgeling architect and his young wife had sacrificed everything to bring the symbol of the godly mission into their home.
A high quality reproduction of the Barcelona Chair is now on special sale at SofaSale.com.hk
In the furniture industry nothing is more exciting than crafting new wooden furniture from reclaimed and salvaged wood. This wood has seen some initial use prior to becoming rustic furniture. Much of this wood has been lying around for decades. Some of the wood that we use originated as dead and fallen trees, and now have a second life as rustic furniture. We’ve worked hard to responsibly source the wood that we use in crafting our custom rustic furniture. What does that mean, responsibly sourcing? The ICC defines responsible sourcing as “a voluntary commitment by companies to take into account social and environmental considerations when managing their relationships with suppliers.” We like to think of responsible sourcing as caring about the community that we live in and caring about the consequences of our actions inside of that community.
It’s easy and really inexpensive to source fresh cut wood from other countries due to their low standards for sustainable practices, community development, and economic longevity. Even though this is obviously not sustainable, many companies source their materials in this fashion. We do not do this. We have chosen to only use wood that is reclaimed an, thereby putting our actions toward building & developing the responsible wood market on our home turf. Can a company care for the community in which it exists, be environmentally responsible, and be successful? We think it can. We see business as a function of the community, as an opportunity for cooperation that can positively affect everyone.
At SofaSale we love working with reclaimed and salvaged wood and being a well recognised source for rustic furniture in Hong Kong. Why do we work with reclaimed and salvaged wood? In addition to the value of community responsibility and environmental consciousness, reclaimed and salvaged wood is the best material to work with and the best material for achieving our aesthetic goals. The unique qualities of this material is unlike anything else. Each finished piece of rustic furniture is designed and handcrafted with the purpose of celebrating the amazingly unique qualities different in every tree slab, log, root, or stump. We recycle wood and transform it into dining tables, cabinets, dressoirs, storage boxes.
Obviously can do a lot more with reclaimed wood, below you will find a small selection of great fresh designs, on which we love to bring something similar to the market in the next few months.
Outdoor ceiling fans have been a practical way to cool outdoor spaces since the 1900s — particularly in the tea areas, where they've been as obligatory as sweet tea when it comes to beating summer heat. Today, porch ceiling fans are a wonderful way to create a breeze, add light and contribute to a stylish decor. By introducing movement into otherwise still air, outdoor fans are an energy-efficient way to stay cool all summer long.
Here, a few tips on how to incorporate a fan into your outdoor room.
Ceiling fans create circulation, making the porch feel up to 8 degrees cooler. The drop in temperature makes outdoor lounging much more enjoyable in the summer.
Placing outdoor ceiling fans about 5 meter apart on the porch allows for maximum air movement and cooling potential.
Ceiling fans are available in styles and materials that can complement any outdoor decor. Natural materials hold up well in the weather and coordinate well with the surroundings.
A simple white fan blends beautifully with a white ceiling, creating an unobtrusive way to cool the outdoor space, like the: Hunter Flight Ceiling Fan
An industrial metal ceiling fan works nicely with a more modern decor, making the outside area seem as sleek and stylish as the inside, like the: Hunter Pacific ceiling fan Typhoon 316
Ceiling fans are a great way to add more light to your porch, as well. A central diffusing light — like the one on this fan — is a simple way to provide general illumination. The larger the diffuser, the softer the light.
Ceiling fan lights generally do not provide as much light as a same-size pendant light, so keep that in mind when you're planning an outdoor lighting scheme.
