Inside a Hong Kong village house like no other – a stylish, functional family home

Hong Kong’s village houses are as cookie-cutter as they come but one Sai Kung abode stands out from the rest

    BY CHARMAINE CHAN

Hong Kong village houses are often studies in uniform ugliness, built cheaply to cookie-cutter plans. Think small windows, exposed pipes and exterior walls blighted by air conditioners and other eyesores.

Andrew Ho Hoi-tung’s three-storey, 2,100 sq ft village house in Sai Kung breaks the mould for several reasons: he designed it in 2013 to meet his and his family’s practical needs and aesthetic sensibilities. A British-trained structural engineer, he saw the potential to create a family home from a semi-detached block of three units, maximising the site’s knockout sea and green views.

  3. Smart Feng Shui tips to create positive energy in your home

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice that has made its way into Western interior design. When using Feng Shui, the goal is to design a home that aligns with who you are as a person. It is also a way to ensure a space allows your energy (or “chi”) to remain positive and constant. And who doesn’t want that? You don’t have to be a Feng Shui expert to apply some of its principles in the home. I’ve gathered five easy tips that even beginners can use!
    1. Get rid of the clutter
reduce                     We’re all guilty of creating clutter now and then – I know I am. Living in a cluttered home can make you feel stressed and overwhelmed. An easy way to keep the junk from piling up is to do a quick de-clutter session once a week.
    1. Ensure quality lighting
lighting                   Dim lighting can drain our energy, so make sure each room has the right amount of light. For me, the best source of light is natural light. Installing various light sources is necessary, of course, so you can have light during evenings or in rooms without big windows.
    1. Keep electronics out of the bedroom
phones                   This is hard, I know, but quality sleep and relaxation is essential for creating good energy. Not only does a TV or computer in the room tempt you to stay up later than planned, but electronics can also diminish your quality of sleep.
    1. Let nature in
nature                     Nature is soothing and the five elements of Feng Shui (wood, earth, fire, water and metal) have a lot to do with the outdoors. Wooden furniture pieces, plants and an indoor water fountain are all great ways to add nature to your home.
    1. Choose colours carefully
colours                 In Feng Shui, colours are important. For example, if I want a room to be relaxing, I could use the color blue to create a sense of calm. Here is a useful guide I found for choosing colours in Feng Shui. After applying some of these basic Feng Shui techniques, you might start to notice a change in how you feel at home. Feng Shui can help you feel happier, relaxed and more energized.

  9. Tell us.... Who deserves a FREE Air-2-Chair

Tell us. Who deserves a free Air-2-Chair?

We are looking for product testers.

Currently SofaSale is running a Facebook promotion and is recruiting cool product testers, so if you and your friend are keen to get a FREE Air-2-Chair, better let us know by Facebook. SofaSale will start selection a testing crew, so this new cool gadget can be fully tested over the festive season.

Share our Facebook post to your best friends, with who you would like to test our new Air-2-Chair.

Inflatable chairs are great for bringing to the outdoors, since they give you a functional outdoor furniture that can pack into a pouch on your backpack. Problem is, they also require pumps that take up room in your pack, leaving them just a little less capable in the portability department. The Air2Chair changes that.

Unlike other inflatable chairs, this one doesn’t require any kind of pump to inflate. Instead, it uses one of those modern inflatable setups that requires you to just move it through the air to sufficiently inflate. According to the outfit, all you need to do is hold the mouth wide open, take a couple of steps until it fully inflates and seal it (a process that should take no more than 10 seconds). From there, you can use it to sit back, relax, and give your legs a rest.

When fully inflated, the Air2Chair looks like a bean bag lounger – you know, the kind you probably had in your dorm back when you were going to school. Except, the darn thing is inflatable and designed for the outdoors, so you can sit on it whether you’re lounging in the backyard, partying at a festival, or soaking up the sun at the beach. With a deep and wide seat, along with an equally wide and tall back rest, the chair should support your whole body, with a feel that the outfit claims resembles “floating on a cloud.” Yeah, we’re not sure how you’re supposed to float on a cloud, either, but we’ll take it. Because of that wide profile, the chair supports a variety of lounging positions, so you can plop down in different ways without feeling awkward.

Construction is triple-coated nylon for the chair with double-stitched seams, so this should handle sand, grass, and paved grounds without any trouble, although they offer an optional protective mat that allows you to use it on rocks and similar terrain without taking damage. Since nylon probably won’t be comfortable as a seat, it comes with a suede cover that zips along the edges of the resting sections to serve as a seating surface. The suede, by the way, is water-repellent, so you can use it by the poolside, enjoy drinks while sitting on it, and even use it in the rain without leaving it soaking. It’s washable, too, so you can just throw it in with the laundry when it gets a little too dirty for comfort.

Do note, the Air2Chair isn’t designed to stay inflated for an entire day. Instead, it slowly loses air as time passes, likely requiring you to reopen the closure and refill it after four hours. Considering the whole process takes no more than 10 seconds, it doesn’t sound like all that much of a hassle.
